Waking daddy up: Restoring a father’s place in a borderline personality disorder couple
Abstract:
Mothers with borderline personality disorder (BPD) often struggle with triangular relationships and reject the possibility of the father’s relationship with their baby, as this would imply the baby’s separateness. The father then is in a pbkp_redicament of trying to create a space for himself as a father in the face of his partner’s forceful negation. This situation in a BPD couple may be compounded by the father’s own conflicts in assuming fatherhood, who cannot act as a helpful separating third. The impact on a child’s psychic development, understanding of self and capacity to relate to others can be profound. This chapter discusses these dynamics and illustrates this complex interplay through a case in parent infant psychotherapy.
