What do we expect from elementary student teachers? A national analysis of rating forms

Donald J. Reyes Fred Isele, Jr. Student teaching is the capstone experience for students in the processof becoming teachers! Here students have the opportunity to apply concepts and principles learned in the academic classroom to situations found in a real world setting. In this sense, student teaching is a summative experience reflecting both professional and general academic content, as well as learnings attained from other field experiences. Since student teaching is summative, it is appropriate to expect that evaluations of student teachers contain criteria which are representative of those knowledge bases which structure specific teacher trainingprograms. Indeed, one might catch a glimpse of how teacher preparation programs are conceptualized by examining evaluation criteria found on summative rating forms used to assess student teaching performance.
