What three decades of Landsat data indicate about the status of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor
Abstract:
The Landsat program-managed by NASA and the USGS-recently marked fifty years since the launch of the program's first satellite in 1972. The open availability of data from the program's 8 satellites has allowed for unprecedented study of the world's terrestrial and marine ecosystems, by providing an important time series with which to understand change. Following decades of conflict, in 1993, the eight constituent governments of Central America and neighboring Mexico came together to establish a Mesoamerican Biological Corridor (MBC), to protect terrestrial ecosystems that had been ravaged by prior rampant deforestation. The availability of Landsat data in 2022 provides a 30-year window on the evolution of the MBC, allowing policy-makers to address how effective the network of protected areas and proposed corridors has actually been.
