Wireless system for supporting home health care of chronic disease patients
Abstract:
The use of emerging Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) technologies in medical applications could help to address the problem of the increasing number of chronic patients worldwide. Despite the plethora of medical mobile applications, the use of WBAN technology for health care services at a home environments is just emerging. This work presents the design process of a WBAN system aimed to support in-home health care services of patients with chronic heart and respiratory diseases. The design process starts with a set of value co-creation exercises to specify system requirements that yields to a conceptual prototype, and later to a hardware/software implementation. A system prototype is evaluated in terms of latency, wireless communication packet loss, and power consumption, showing that it is suitable for supporting health care services at home.
