Abstract:

In this research, we study the impact of the minimum wages increase on the reduction of income inequality in South America. While the two phenomena coincide in 2002-2011, the results show that the impact of the minimum wages increase on the lowest wages, the main source of the reduction of inequality, existed, although it was minimal. The analysis calls for reducing informality for a better labor law enforcement to ensure that the minimum wage increase can have a real and meaningful impact on lower wages.
