γ-Rays and ions irradiation
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the principles of surface modification induced by ionizing radiation, as well as its main applications. Highlighting characteristics and advantages offered using γ-rays and swift heavy ion but recognizing limitations and challenges that the technique must face. The effects of ionizing radiation on polymers may seem complicated to control or not very specific; with an adequate control of irradiation, results are limited to only a few processes that contribute to the enhancement of properties. Radiation-induced modifications can be limited to the surface, without modifying the bulk and; therefore, their inherent characteristics. The main radioactive sources used for modification of polymeric materials with γ-rays are 60Co and 137Cs. Grafting modifications of polymeric surfaces, hoard the majority of reported investigations, due to its versatility, simplicity, and the infinity of vinyl monomers that can be grafted on a wide variety of polymers. The chapter focuses on the characteristics and benefits of radiation-induced cross-linking by γ-rays.
