“Roland Barthes and you are now Friends”: Facebook and the friendship myth

Abstract:

This article analyzes the meaning of friendship in the social network Facebook through the concept of myth proposed by Roland Barthes. We consider that the strategic use of the concept of friendship by Facebook has created a kind of “myth of friendship” in which friendship, a historically and culturally variable concept, is presented and “normalized” as something fundamentally positive and quantitative, based on the logic of adding new “friends” and sharing personal information with them. The article, as Barthes did in his famous Mythologies, tries to “decipher” and “dismantle” this myth in order to bring to the surface its hidden meaning.
