Green Infrastructure and Smart Trees: Combating Urban Heat in Guayaquil City, Ecuador


Abstract:

Urban heat islands, resulting from rapid urban expansion with minimal consideration for green spaces, pose a significant challenge. This necessitates a transition towards green infrastructure, such as greenways, instead of traditional gray solutions. Green infrastructure, through carbon sequestration, shading, and provision of recreational areas, plays a pivotal role in mitigating urban heat. This paper introduces a smart tree equipped with sensors and an internet-connected system, enabling real-time monitoring of urban climate, particularly in areas with high heat indexes. Through comprehensive data collection facilitated by the Blynk cloud platform, the effectiveness of green-ways in reducing heat emissions and preserving essential trees is demonstrated. Ultimately, the importance of embracing nature-based solutions and cutting-edge technologies is emphasized in fostering a cooler and ecologically balanced urban environment.
