Aortic root trauma: serious injuries requiring early recognition and management
Abstract:
A 25-year-old male belted driver was involved in a single motor vehicle crash when his car collided head-on with a highway bridge abutment. The speed of the vehicle was unknown but was estimated in the police investigation to be in excess of 110 km/h. The patient lost consciousness for 5 minutes and suffered over 1 hour of retrograde amnesia. During the extrication, severe damage of the steering column was noted. Based on the mechanism of injury and severity of the patient’s injuries, an air ambulance was dispatched to the scene. The patient was transported to our regional trauma unit (15 minute transport time), arriving 1 hour and 15 minutes after the crash. During transport, there was a brief period of bradycardia and hypotension that resolved spontaneously.
