Comparison of Long COVID patient groups with age-related differences in severity


Abstract:

Introduction: Research on the relationship between age differences and the severity of Long COVID is of vital importance to understand how this syndrome affects different age groups differently. Objective: The objective of the study was to identify whether age differences are related to the severity of Long COVID. Methods: The study corresponded to the relational level and was classified as observational, cross-sectional, analytical and retrospective. The study population consisted of 168 patients from a hospital in Ecuador. The X2 test of homogeneity was used. It was hypothesised that there were significant differences in the severity of Long COVID between the age groups analysed. Results: In the youth group (18-30 years), 60 % had mild severity, 30 % moderate severity and 10 % severe severity. In the adult group (31-64 years), 40 % had mild severity, 50 % had moderate severity and 10 % had severe severity. In the older adult group (65 years and older), 20 % experienced mild severity, 40 % moderate severity and 40 % severe severity. The asymptotic significance (bilateral) was 0.197. Conclusions: There was no significant difference in the severity of Long COVID between the age groups analysed. Further research and exploration of other possible determinants of Long COVID severity is needed to better understand its clinical implications and to develop appropriate prevention and treatment strategies.
