A framework and roadmap for enhancing the application of privacy design patterns

Abstract:

Privacy patterns have become a cornerstone of the Privacy by Design paradigm realization by being used in different methodologies, strategies, tools, and many other privacy engineering proposals reported in the state-of-the-art. While these proposals treat the privacy patterns as ready-to-use components, their application is far from trivial. Overlooking the effort required to put privacy patterns into action could hinder their adoption and thus the success of all the proposals based on them. In spite of that, the application of privacy patterns has not been studied before. In this work, we firstly study the aspects influencing the application of patterns based on previous experiences reported in the close and more mature domain of security patterns. Then, we propose a framework for enhancing the application of patterns. This framework is used as a reference to analyze the current state of the privacy-pattern domain, including the solutions that are already available and the drawbacks still hindering their application. Finally, future steps in this area are discussed.
