Abstract:

This catalogue of documents from the state archives of the Russian Federation describes materials (reports, telegrams, and other communications) from the Secretariat of the NKVDMVD (People's Commissariat, and then Ministry, of Internal Affairs) that were passed on to Stalin during the period from 1944 to 1953 and classified as part of his" special files." Although some starred items are still classified and thus not accessible to researchers, most are now available. Judging from the descriptions, these documents represent a gold mine for researchers. As the editors put it:" The time is gone when two or three new facts, having fallen by chance into the hands of a historian, were enough for an analytical article, and when twenty or thirty new archival documents were enough for a whole book"(3).
