Optica-EPN's Outreach Initiatives: Building a Culture of Science Engagement

Abstract:

This article presents initiatives realized by the Optica Student Chapter of Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ecuador, to disseminate optics and photonics in our Country. These activities have been focused on three areas: 1) Awakening interest in the new generations of students, 2) access to quality scientific knowledge at all academic levels, and 3) promoting general interest in science in our society. The initiatives implemented through the development of low-cost instrument development, the realization of workshops, and conferences, have been well received by the community. As a result of our efforts, the student chapter was awarded one of the three international Optica Foundation Chapter Community Engagement Prize in 2023, thus becoming an international reference in science outreach and engagement.
