Diet of the Striped Owl (Asio clamator, Strigidae) in an urban environment, Cuenca, Ecuador
Abstract:
Information on the trophic ecology of Strigiformes in Ecuador scarce. Here, we describe the diet of the Striped Owl (Asio clamator), within an urban park in Cuenca, an unusual location for this species in Ecuador. We analysed 69 pellets collected between September 2021 and October 2023. The Striped Owl fed on native and introduced rodents, birds, and insects. Rodents of the genus Rattus dominated in frequency (76.4%) and biomass contribution (94.8%). The study of diets is an essential part of the natural history of each species and reveals its requirements and even the threats it faces.
