Didactic system for the control of bleeding
Abstract:
Survival of individuals suffering from trauma-related hemorrhage could be increased with proper education and training. A didactic system was built so that students and first aid workers can become familiar with the mechanical methods of hemostasis. A flow control system was developed and adapted to a bleeding simulation kit. Four mechanical methods of hemostasis were used to determine the percentage reduction in a bleeding in external hemorrhage. A lambda type tuner developed in MATLAB was used to adjust the parameters of the integral-derivative-proportional controller of the system. A graphical interface was developed to visualize and/or modify these control parameters in smart devices, so that students can understand the process, the variables and the applied method. The CAT-type turnstile method was found to be the most effective in controlling bleeding. No significant differences (p_value=0.995) were found between the theoretical values and those produced by the system.
