Gender-based violence in university students: A multidimensional analysis of causes, consequences, and prevention strategies
Abstract:
Gender-based violence is a persistent problem in educational settings, reflecting the structural inequalities present in society. In the university setting, this phenomenon profoundly affects students’ mental health, academic performance, and overall development. This study aimed to analyze the current situation of gender-based violence at the Morona Santiago campus of the Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo, Ecuador, using a quantitative approach, with a descriptive scope and a non-experimental design. A survey was administered to the entire student body to identify the prevalence, types, causes, and consequences of this problem. The results reveal that 10% of students reported having been victims of gender-based violence, with psychological violence predominating. The most common consequences were anxiety, depression, and poor academic performance. Furthermore, most cases went unreported, mainly due to fear, institutional mistrust, or lack of information. It is concluded that gender violence at the University constitutes a structural, invisible and silenced phenomenon, which requires urgent responses from a gender and human rights perspective, focused on prevention, support and the implementation of effective protocols.
