Assessing Burnout Syndrome Among Medical Staff at a Tertiary Hospital in Guayaquil

Abstract:

Burnout is a professional mental health syndrome marked by exhaustion, growing detachment from work, and decreased work efficiency. It can lead to serious consequences for physicians, including medical errors, legal disputes, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome among doctors in a tertiary hospital in Guayaquil. Utilizing the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-HSS) assessment tool, it was found that 21.8% of the 78 doctors surveyed met all criteria for Burnout Syndrome. Notably, male physicians exhibited more pronounced signs of burnout than their female counterparts. This underscores the importance of personalized interventions and a holistic understanding of workplace challenges, especially in high-pressure environments like healthcare. Future policies and workplace reforms should address these issues to ensure both the well-being of medical professionals and the quality of patient care.
