Abstract:

Charles Reade is largely remembered today for a not very memorable novel, The Cloister and the Hearth. In his own life-time he was a playwright, novelist, short story writer, don, campaigner for authors' rights and a champion of those who suffered from legal and social injustices. He was an excellent self-publicist, yet he remains an eccentric and enigmatic figure. Hammet's introduction to his edition of selected plays by Reade takes us through Reade's interesting and intriguing life, embracing the paradoxes embodied by Reade with enthusiasm, but fails to crack the mystery. What he does show, however, is how firmly Reade is representative of the Victorian temperament.
