" Predictability-controllability of chronic stress: effects upon motivational and associative deficits in rats
Abstract:
Objective: We employed chronic stressors to evaluate Learned Helplessness model. Overmier (1985) indicated that uncontrollability was responsible of motivational deficits, unpredictability caused associative deficits, and both originated emotional deficits. Method: 25 albine rats were exposed to 10 sessions of shocks (chronic stress); predictability and controllability was manipulated. Results: The results in a controllable later phase indicated that rats in the previous uncontrollable condition showed motivational and emotional deficits. Predictability invert its pattern, and origins motivational deficits. Discussion: The role of predictability on deficits is discussed, and related with chronicity of uncontrollable stressors.
