Analysis of determinants of the impact of scientific production: A bibliometric approach applied to the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), Ecuador
Abstract:
Latin America continues its efforts to produce research-oriented universities, responding to current challenges in a region with less academic tradition and putting pressure on these institutions to have high-impact scientific productions and occupy stellar places in both national and international rankings. Under this context, this study analyzed the case of the scientific production of the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), an Ecuadorian public research institution, to contrast hypotheses about its intellectual contributions and about quality and impact measurements. The number of citations continues to be an important indicator of the quality of scientific production. The findings of the intellectual contributions of this institution showed that age and length are significantly related to higher citations. The articles published in high-impact journals, the number of authors and their regional distances have a positive effect on the number of citations and, finally, in terms of gender gap there were no significant results.
