Multimodal Systems for Automated Oral Presentation Feedback: A Comparative Analysis

Abstract:

Educational institutions desire to provide their students with ample opportunity to practice oral communication skills. However, the cost of providing regular feedback is prohibitively high for faculty that are already overworked. Several multimodal systems to provide automated feedback for oral presentations have been developed in the last 15 years. This chapter conducts a comparative technical analysis of twelve of this kind of systems that has been proposed in the literature. Through this analysis is easy to conclude that while different, these systems follow similar steps although they vary in purpose and implementation details. Another conclusion is that that most of these systems are under-evaluated lab prototypes that were not able to cross the adoption chasm. In the light of the limitations and immaturity of current systems, this chapter concludes with recommendations for the research and development of a new generation of more scalable and pedagogically-useful systems.
