Teratomas
Abstract:
Teratomas are neoplastic lesions, composed of multiple tissues foreign to the organ or site in which they arise. Fortunately, most of these lesions are benign with a favourable outcome. They may present in the antenatal period and pose the threat of fetal hydrops if large. Most neonatal teratomas are amenable to complete surgical excision. Large malignant lesions may be offered chemotherapy for tumour reduction. Alpha-fetoprotein is the tumour marker of choice and is particularly useful for assessing the presence of malignancy and residual or recurrent disease.
