Epidemiological complexity of dengue virus infection in Latin America and its impact on regional vaccination strategies. Analysis by the Arbovirus Expert Group of the Foundation for Fighting Infectious Diseases in Developing Countries (FIDEC)


Abstract:

In March 2024, a preliminary meeting of the Latin American Den-gue Forum, a regional multidisciplinary group of arbovirus specialists convened by the Foundation “ Fighting Infectious Diseases in Developing Countries” (FIDEC), was held in Panama City. The objective was to analyze in detail the complex issue of dengue on the continent and to formulate a strategic framework aimed at optimizing the control and prevention of the disease in Latin America. This approach encom-passes all aspects related to dengue disease, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, vector control, environmental considerations, and analysis of the effects of regulations and policies. In November of that year, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a workshop involving Dengue Forum specialists took place, during which key proposals were deliberated and formulated to enhance dengue monitoring, diagnosis, and prevention strategies. Consequently, a position paper was drafted, summarizing the salient aspects of the current epidemiological status of the disease in the region and the expert group’s recommendations to overcome the existing limitations and barriers hindering a compre hensive approach to the disease.
