Quality of management in physical activity, sports and health in the province of Orellana, Ecuador

Abstract:

Introduction: The quality of management in physical activity, sports, and health refers to the level at which administrative, organizational, and operational actions in these sectors effectively, efficiently, and fairly meet the demands and expectations of the population. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the quality of territorial management taking into account its particular characteristics. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a strategy aimed at improving the quality of management in physical activity, sports, and health services in the province of Orellana, Ecuador. Methods: Thirteen experts evaluated the quality of management in the aforementioned services in two moments. A management strategy was implemented with actions in ten quality indicators to improve the services offered to the community of Orellana. Results: All the indicators evaluated showed favorable data as part of the post-test (Formal institutional plan: +0.8; Clarity of objectives and goals: +0.8; Level of the staff training: +0.6; Training received: +0.9; Availability and maintenance: +0.4; Service accessibility: +0.6; Community inclusion: +0.9; User satisfaction: +1.5; Internal evaluation: +0.9; Implementation of improvements: +0.9), by obtaining a significant value (p<0.05). Conclusions: The strategy implemented in Orellana had beneficial effects on the perceived quality of management of physical activity, sports, and health services. The improvement in key indicators demonstrates the effectiveness of the interventions. There are challenges related to infrastructure, the sustainability of the modifications, and the need to strengthen evaluation with objective information and long-term monitoring.
