A graphical user interface tool for early design stage evaluation of marine vessels power system architectures

Abstract:

Numerous marine vessels are built with integrated power system (IPS) that feeds power to the propulsion and auxiliary loads on-board. With the advancements in electrical power generation, distribution, conversion, utilization, control and storage technologies, the ship power system designers are offered with number of choices in terms of selection of individual components as well as the complete power system architecture for a target vessel application. However, there is a lack of method or tool that can provide early design stage evaluation of the potential marine vessel power system architectures which may be helpful not only to the design team but also to the suppliers and end-users. This work relates to development of a graphical user interface (GUI) tool for evaluation of marine vessel power system architectures and recommendations for its enhancements at an early design stage in a comprehensive and quick, yet user friendly manner. The major aspects of the tool development and its deliverables, which include performance evaluation of various candidate architectures for the given vessel application under different operating profile, analysis of the evaluation results and generation of detailed report are presented. The tool is developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment with the GUI, State Flow, Sim Power System, Report Generator and Spreadsheet toolboxes and it is attempted to make the tool more generic, flexible and user friendly.
