Emergence profile following immediate implant placement in the esthetic zone
Abstract:
To generate a pleasing emergence profile, it is important to start from the basics, the selection of the implant itself. The implant design will dictate its correct apicocoronal and 3D positioning. In the case of immediate implant placement, the main objective is to maintain the gingival architecture with a provisional restoration, provided that it was initially favorable and that the implant was sufficiently stable at placement. Various restorative materials have been promoted for implant-supported restorations in the esthetic region, from metal-ceramic to metal-free zirconia. Factors affecting emergence profile include implant design, 3D implant positioning, placement depth, gingival phenotype and contour, original tooth shape, precise transitional restorations, abutment connection, and restorative material. Recreation of lost gingival architecture is possible by slowly modifying the transitional prosthesis emergence profile. Favorable emergence profiles developed with provisional restorations must be replicated for definitive restorations.
