Systematic Literature Review on the Dissemination of Nutrition-Related Misinformation on Social Networks


Abstract:

Background: this article, framed within the European project NUTRIWELLB (2022-1-ES01-KA 220-HED-000089546), analyses nutritional misinformation on social media and its impact on public health, and identifies patterns of spread and key strategies to mitigate its effects. The objectives were to review the scientific literature on the topic to analyse the predominant approaches to nutritional misinformation in social media and contribute to the development of effective intervention strategies. Methods: following PRISMA, a search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and Cochrane (2018-2023), applying rigorous selection criteria and qualitative and quantitative analysis. Results: nutritional misinformation affects social perception and behaviour, with variations according to cultural context. The need for media literacy and regulation is highlighted. Conclusions: this study provides key evidence to design education, regulation and technology strategies, promoting a trusted digital environment supported by health experts.
