John Russell Stephens, The Profession of the Playwright: British Theatre I800-1900 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1992) Ihadalways found John Russell Stephens' The Censorship ofEnglish Drama 1824-1901 an exemplary and indispensable reference book, especially for primary sources in nineteenth-century British theatre history, so looked forward to a companion volume of equal quality on nineteenth-century British playwrights. In many ways Stephens has lived up to expectation. His new book, although not quite as illuminating as his study of censorship, will again be an invaluable work of reference, providing a clear and informative guide to such complex legal issues as dramatic copyright in nineteenthcentury Britain, the relationship of playwrights to theatre managementand to publishers, and the gradual emergence of the professional dramatist, in relative control of both play and its production …
