" The Theatre Industry in Nineteenth Century France" by FWJ Hemmings (Book Review)
Abstract:
FEVIEWS 219 century French theatre,“real greatness had departed from the stage and was not to return until the theatre moved into its post-industrial period in the following century”. There is always going to be a need for books which sketch in broad historical details in order to provide a background for more specific research. Yet, despite its scholarship, this seems to be a methodologically-unfocused book, often relying uncritically on anecdotal evidence for its explanation of the trends and developments it depicts. Its usefulness as a general reference book is undisputable, but its reluctance to stimulate debate or take interpretative risks makes it less compelling that some of the more recent published work on nineteenth-century English and American theatre. Within the boundaries he has set himself, however, Hemmings unearths much of interest. Whilst his section on audiences tells us little about demographics …
