04-048 – Advancing biomass gasification: a review of simulation, machine learning, and optimization strategies
Abstract:
Biomass gasification is a promising alternative for clean and sustainable energy production needed to meet energy demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study reviews recent advances (2015-2025) in simulation, machine learning, and optimization strategies applied to gasification. The bibliometric analysis developed evidence of an annual growth of 25.25% in scientific publications, with a strong trend towards integrating simulation models, optimization techniques, and machine learning models to predict syngas composition and improve process efficiency. The review identifies the main challenges in modeling the process, such as the complexity of the chemical reactions, the formation of unwanted by-products, and the variability in biomass composition. Finally, it highlights future research to develop open-source tools to facilitate modeling, prediction, and optimization of the gasification process for application in urban waste treatment plants and sustainable smart cities.
