Association of semen ph with sperm motility in patients

Abstract:

Introduction: Abnormal semen pH (either too acidic or too alkaline) could affect sperm viability and motility, thus influencing male fertility. Objective: The objective of the study was to associate semen pH with sperm motility in patients from a clinic in Santo Domingo, Ecuador. Methods: The study carried out corresponded to the relational research level, being observational, cross-sectional, analytical and prospective. It was hypothesized that there is a significant association between sperm motility and different semen pH levels in the study population. The study sample comprised 120 men who received care at the clinic in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, and the simple random sampling technique was used. The chi-square test of independence was used. Results: In the low or acid pH group, there was a higher proportion of low sperm motility (30.8 %) compared to medium and high sperm motility. In contrast, in the high pH or alkaline group, a similar distribution was identified between the different levels of sperm motility. The chi-square test showed chi-square values of 2.610 (p=0.625), likelihood ratio of 2.593 (p=0.628) and linear by linear association of 0.854 (p=0.355). Conclusions: There was no evidence to reject the null hypothesis that there is no significant association between sperm motility and different semen pH levels in the study population.
