Current energy certification and requirements of the new European Directive on energy efficiency of buildings

Abstract:

Taking into account the new recast of the European Union Directive on the energy efficiency of buildings, approved in 2024, the requirements regarding energy certification of buildings increase considerably. Aspects such as the assessment of global warming potential throughout the life cycle, indoor environmental quality requirements, or preparation for smart applications should be included in the proposed building energy certification. However, it is also established that simplified procedures must be established to update an energy efficiency certificate with the aim of reducing the cost of issuing the certificate, such as the use of a digital twin of the building that allows data on the building's performance to be updated. This work analyzes the new requirements on energy certification based on existing programs.
