Mass urine glucose screening in children
Abstract:
Urinary glucose screening of school children is not an epidemiologically sound practice for several reasons: Most children destined to develop diabetes over the 12-mo period between tests will be missed, giving a false sense of security; most glucosuria described will be nondiabetic, and the cost-yield ratio will be extremely high. Glucosuria has been found to occur 1 hr after a glucose load in 5% of nearly 6000 nondiabetic children 4-14 yr of age, with considerable age and racial differences in frequency. The testing served no predictive or diagnostic value in the health screening of the children. These observations emphasize the nondiabetic nature of most childhood glucosuria. © 1973.
