Saponins as Natural Emulsifiers: Challenges, Regulatory Landscape, and Future in Biomedical and Cosmetic Fields


Abstract:

Saponins have gained prominence in biomedical and cosmetic applications due to their emulsifying properties and beneficial biological activities. This review summarizes the conceptual framework and recent advancements in the use of saponins, exploring their chemical structure, sources, and properties, with a focus on Quillaja, argan, and ginseng varieties. They are examined for their role as emulsifiers, comparing their effectiveness to other agents and discussing factors influencing their performance. Both traditional and advanced manufacturing methods are covered, along with characterization techniques and biocompatibility assessments. Also, the integration of computational tools, including molecular dynamics simulations and predictive modeling, is explored for optimizing saponin formulations. Applications in drug delivery, anti-inflammatory and anticancer therapies, and skincare are highlighted. The regulatory landscape and the potential for sustainable saponin based products are also addressed. The bitterness and cytotoxicity of these molecules, which could limit their potential for practical use, are also discussed. Addressing these challenges is crucial to fully realize the potential of saponins in commercial applications, offering a roadmap for researchers and industry professionals.
