Kinect-Enabled Electronic Game for Developing Cognitive and Gross Motor Skills in 4-5-Year-Old Children
Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a Kinect enabled electronic game implemented for stimulating the development of cognitive and gross motor skills in 4–5-year-old children. The game consists of catching as many moving objects as possible within a virtual environment using all different parts of the body (torso, head, legs, and arms). A study was carried out with the participation of children of an Ambato school, in the Tungurahua province. After four attempts of using the game, the children participating in the experiment showed satisfactory results. Concerning the actions related to gross motor skills, an increase of 70% on the success level was attained while the cognitive skills showed a 35% increase on the level of success. These positive results corroborate that the proposed study is an efficient tool for improving the cognitive and gross motor skills in 4–5-year-old children.
