Application of thermoeconomic analysis to the evaluation of potential improvement for energy resources saving in process plants

Abstract:

The aim of the paper is to apply the thermoeconomic methodology to evaluate the cost of the energy resources saving that could be obtained by means of efficiency improvement in one or more components of the system and analyze its feasibility from an economical point of view. The paper is divided in two parts: In the first part the theoretical background is developed. A generalized expression of the fuel impact formula in monetary terms, which includes the formation and abatement cost of residuals or wastes, is obtained. The proposed formula is expressed as the net operating revenue (NOR) of the system improvement project. It takes advantage of the thermoeconomic isolation principle and decomposition to analyze the potential saving of each component instead the analysis of the overall system. In the second part, the proposed methodology is applied to a plant that integrates a waste-to-energy system with a gas combined cycle. Copyright © 2008 by ASME.
