Plasma interlekin-6 in obese and non obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome


Abstract:

Objective: To determine plasma concentrations of interleukin-6 in obese and non-obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods: Women with diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome and age-matched healthy controls, regular menstruations and normal ultrasound ovaries were selected and divided in four groups (group A: polycystic ovary syndrome and obese; group B: polycystic ovary syndrome and non-obese; group C: obese controls and group D non-obese controls) according to body mass index (obese > 30 Kg/m<sup>2</sup> y non-obese < 25 kg/m<sup>2</sup>). Concentrations of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, androstenodione, testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, serum glucose, insulin and interleukin-6 were measured. Results: Obese and non-obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome had higher luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, androstenodione, testosterone, and insulin levels as compared to women in the obese and non-obese control group, respectively (p < 0.0001). Women with polycystic ovary syndrome had significantly higher of of interleukin-6 (group A 6.7 +/- 1.2 pg/mL and group B: 2.6 +/- 0.7 pg/mL) as compared with controls (group C: 2.0 +/- 0.6 pg/mL and group D 1.3 +/- 0.4 pg/mL; p < 0.0001). We observed that interleukin-6 concentrations presented a positive and significant correlation with fasting glycaemia and insulin in polycystic ovary syndrome women (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Significant differences exist in plasma interleukin-6 concentrations between obese and non-obese women as compared with polycystic ovary syndrome and normal controls.
