Burnout among university students: analysis based on resilience, gender, age, and education level

Abstract:

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of resilience, gender, age, and academic level on each dimension of the academic burnout syndrome among university students. The methodology is relationalpredictive and two assessment instruments are applied: the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBISS) and the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10). The sample comprises 2110 students. Applying the Forced Entry multiple linear regression yields the following three regression equations: 1) Cynicism = 8.396 – 0.296*(Academic Efficacy) + 0.349*(Emotional Exhaustion) + 0.084*(Resilience) – 0.649*(Sex) – 0.106*(Age) + 0.174*(Education level), 2) Academic efficacy = 14.058 – 0.419*(Cynicism) + 0.334* (Resilience), and 3) Emotional exhaustion = 11.651 + 0.603*(Cynicism) - 0.179*(Resilience) + 0.114*(Age) + 0.129*(Education level). It is concluded that resilience significantly predicts each burnout dimension while age and educational level correlate with increased levels of emotional exhaustion and cynicism.
