Analysis of hate speech and discrimination in social network X towards the Indigenous Movement in the context of the 2019 and 2022 National Strike in Ecuador

Abstract:

This study aims to contribute to the analysis of online hate speech and understand the formation of opinion in the digital age. It focuses on investigating hate speech towards the Indigenous Movement during the national strikes of 2019 and 2022 in Ecuador on the social network X, due to the growing influence of social media in shaping public opinion. The methodology used has a mixed approach, both qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative approach utilizes content analysis to observe the categories and intensities of hate speech, the frequent use of words as narrative elements, and the types of accounts that emit hate speech. The quantitative approach considers the number of posts detected with discriminatory characteristics. The analysis reveals an exacerbated polarization during the national strikes of 2019 and 2022, with predominantly hostile and aggressive discourse.
