Vane-induced secondary flow in straight free surface flow
Abstract:
Analytic solutions for the vertical distributions of mean, transverse shear stress and velocity component are presented for transverse flows induced by a system of bottom or surface vanes. The fully-developed flow case is obtained using Boussinesq's simple turbulence model. Alternatively, the transverse bed-shear stress, due to the deflecting vanes, is calculated from the angular-momentum equation for completely developed flow. Finally `similarity' solutions are presented in order to describe how the transverse flow develops longitudinally once the primary flow begins to feel the effect of the vanes. This last calculation includes the inertial term of the angular-momentum equation. The results are verified with measurements of the vertical distribution of the transverse velocity component, and, the transverse bed-shear stress, indirectly, with measurements of the induced, transverse, bed-slope for movable-bed flows.
