Arquitetura moderna no Rio de Janeiro

Abstract:

The events which influenced the genesis of modern Brazilian architecture mostly occured in the city of Rio de Janeiro in about 1930. As a capital, Rio was the center of political decisions and the scene of the country's greatest economic investments, and the city consequently became the main source of culture and, therefore, architecture. Since the 18th century, when Rio became the province's capital, and mainly after the gold cycle decline, the city disclosed the results of the activities of its vice-governors and religious orders. In the 19th century, after the Royal Family's arrival (1808), and throughout the Imperial Period (1822-89), the city of Rio wore neoclassic clothes, brought by the French Mission. Sumptuous examples of a careful construction and of the greatest advances in French, English and Belgian matrices are reflected in office buildings, in the palaces of the power-holders, and slowly spread throughout the province which becomes increasingly richer through coffee farming. At the beginning, the Republic adopts the Eclecticism as an adequate language to found its groundwork on and as a means which is capable of absorbing various technological advances which were exported and imposed by nations which benefitted from the English industrial revolution.
