A microfluidic system for high throughput continuous separation of nanoparticles

Abstract:

In this study, a high throughput nanoparticle separation system is designed that is capable of continuously separating sub-50nm particles. Developed electrical split flow thin fractionation (Electrical SPLITT) system is different from previously established Electrical SPLITT systems. In this design, cyclical electric fields are applied, no splitter is used and different sized outlets are utilized. While the earlier systems could only separate particles bigger than 100nm, here particles as small as 10nm can be separated. The effects of voltage amplitude, offset, frequency, carrier flow rate are investigated and optimal parameters are found for the separation of 10nm gold and silver nanoparticles.
