Articulo invitado: Morphological descriptor for genus Psidium characterization

Abstract:

In Zulia state, Venezuela, guava plantations are trees with growth habit and varied agronomic behavior. The objective of this study was to identify morphological variables that describe the trees and, using them, develop a botanical description of guava. Plants used were of variants Blanca, Criolla Roja, Cubana and Montalbán of Psidium guajava L. and Cas of P. friedrichsthalianum (Berg-Niedenzu) located at the fruit "Cienegos" and at the Centre for Research and Development Socialist Fruit and Beekeeping, Zulia State (CESID-Fruit and Beekeeping-CORPOZULIA), Mara municipality, Zulia state, Venezuela (25 to 33°C annual mean temperature, precipitation between 500 and 600 mm, 2000 to 2200 mm of evaporation and 75% relative humidity), the natural soil fertility is moderate to loss, with an argilic horizon at different depths. Quantitative, qualitative, typical and distinctive morphologic variables that allowed the species characterization were near 70, and included characteristics of the canopy (shape, growth habit, height, diameter and distribution of the branches), stem (surface, diameter and colour), leaves (orientation, shape, margins, size, forms of the apex, bases, petiole and others), flowers (distribution, number, size, fragrance, length of the pedicel, petals number, length and width, stamens number and others) and fruit (forms, fresh biomass, length, width, color, texture, flavor, aroma, seeds length and width and others).
