Assessing perceived discrimination in “brick and mortar” retail settings using a power-responsibility equilibrium framework


Abstract:

According to federal court cases led from 1990 to 2002, people of color have reported negative retail shopping experiences based on allegations of being followed around in stores, being accused of and detained for shopliing based on race, not being allowed to write checks in stores located in ethnic neighborhoods, and being subject to racial slurs by retail employees (Harris, Henderson, & Williams, 2005). ese experiences and the outcomes of both state court cases and state civil rights agencycases suggest that consumers may have concerns about what responses to marketplace discrimination can balance the possible inadequate protection by retail establishments and by the government as power-holders.
