Auricular Acupuncture Pilot Project


Abstract:

Given some evidence that acupuncture is effective in ameliorating withdrawal symptoms associated with addictions, the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) decided to pilot an auricular acupuncture project in two women’s treatment programs (River House and WISER-Women Invested in Sobriety Empowered in Recovery). The one year pilot began in the fall of 2008 and sought to explore:(1) why clients seek acupuncture;(2) benefits/impact from acupuncture as perceived by clients;(3) impact on severity of symptoms and symptom manageability across individuals (where feasible), across programs and across session types1;(4) depressive symptoms from pre to post program and at follow-up; and (5) staff perceptions of acupuncture regarding program delivery and impact on clients.
