Availability of foods, infant mortality and deaths due to malnutrition in Venezuela, 1949-1963.

Abstract:

Because of a rise in the population of Venezuela, amounts of the different groups of available foods per person fell from 1951 to about 1956 or 1958 and reached their lowest level in 1954, but values for 1960 were similar to those for 1951. The foods provided, on average, 2210 kcal energy per person daily in1949 and 1874 kcal in 1954. The supply of total and animal protein was low from 1952, with 52.40 and18. 50 g per person daily in 1954 compared with 63.2 and 27.8 g in 1949. There was no appreciable change in the price index for fresh and processed foods during the period studied. From 1954 to 1958 there was a steep rise in deaths from malnutrition and in infant mortality from 1 to 4 years of age. The subsequent decline was ascribed partly to health programmes and provision of supplementary foods for pre-school children.
