A new species of thief ant of the genus Solenopsis from the Galápagos Islands (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Abstract:

A new ant species, Solenopsis gnoma, was found while excavating a nest of Tetramorium bicarinatum in a rotten trunk on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. The worker is golden brown with a dark brown gaster and the female is concolorous dark brown. We include a description of both the worker and female castes, key characters accompanied with illustrations, as well as a key to the Solenopsis species in the Galapagos Islands.
