Behavior of prurite as an aggravating factor of the impact of psoriasis on daily life activities

Abstract:

Introduction: Psoriasis is a disease that decreases the quality of life of patients who suffer from it by compromising the skin and increasing the risk for comorbidities. Pruritus is one of the main symptoms that patients may suffer, being in some cases limiting, so this study was conducted to determine the impact it has on the interference of psoriasis on daily activities. Materials and methods: An analytical and cross-sectional study was carried out in 200 patients diagnosed with psoriasis treated in the dermatology service of the Hospital of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute of Portoviejo, Manabí- Ecuador Province, during the period from February to July of the year 2015 Logistic regression models were constructed to determine the interference of psoriasis in patients adjusted for sex, age and intensity of pruritus, using odds ratios (OR) and 95 confidence intervals (95% CI) as strength estimators of association. The results of the statistical tests were considered significant when the value of p<0.05. Results: 38.5% reported having high interference in the activities of daily life by psoriasis. The intensity of pruritus was significantly associated with suffering a severe interference from psoriasis on sexual intercourse problems (OR=8.86, 95%CI: 4.31-18.22, p<0.001); use of clothing (OR=2.99, 95%CI: 1.57-5.67, p=0.001); recreational activities (OR=2.48, 95%CI: 1.33-4.63, p=0.004) and activities of daily living (OR=1.90, 95% CI: 1.03-3.49, p=0.038). Conclusions: Intense pruritus is associated with greater impact of psoriasis in activities of daily living, recreational activities, use of clothing and sexual relations, so it should be a key symptom to consider that pbkp_redisposes to have a lower quality of life in patients with psoriasis.
