Beyond nuclear power plants: Cartography of conflicts and resistance to the radioactive presence in Andalusia (Spain)

Abstract:

At the beginning of the 1970s there were two projects to install nuclear power plants in Andalusia, but eventually none of them were built. However, some of the most relevant socio-environmental conflicts related to nuclear energy and its military applications on Spanish soil have taken place in Andalusia. Each of them has led to resistance movements by the affected communities. In this article we present four different conflicts, describing their main social and environmental impacts and the resistance movements that arise to demand recognition and reparation. For this, we use a historiographical account that combines the approaches of Political Ecology and Environmental History.
