Biobased functional additives for polymers

Abstract:

This chapter reviews the most prominent scientific approaches devoted to the development of biobased functional polymer additives, including their chemical composition and mechanism of action. Additionally, a resourceful list of already commercially available products is included. The additives are sorted out in two classes, according to their functionality: - Protective agents: antioxidants, light stabilizers, UV absorbers, flame retardants, heat stabilizers and acid scavengers; - Properties modifiers: impact modifiers, plasticisers, compatibilizers, coupling agents. These novel products are expected to increasingly enter the market, provided that they ensure the same performances of their oil-based counterparts, while representing a safer and more sustainable option. The chapter is intended as a resource for researchers and practitioners working on sustainable polymer formulations and their application.
